  • Vegas + AE + Canon HF G10 and frame rate question

Posted by Jason Kupski on September 29, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Sorry to bother you guys but I cant seem to find the answer to the following question. Im using vegas and my final output will be on DVD. Im taping a show in a theater so there is a high dynamic range of lighting and some low light scenes as well. I’m using vegas for the editing and after effects for color correction etc. (I dont have the same plugins for vegas yet)

What is the best frame rate for me to shoot in with a Canon HF G10?
    24p
    or
    PF30

    Thanks for your time!

That shoots in 1080i I believe. I have the same camera, and it converts well to DVD. If you are looking for a more “cinema” look, do 24, if not use PF30 or 60i…..I shoot at the highest MBPS and it looks great. I also use the one preset that allows you to set the shutter speed (60), set the AGC to manual and zero, and let the auto iris take care of the exposure, and have had good results.
    Good luck!

I have a comparable Canon Vixia HF S21 and have shot stuff in theater, and I generally will shoot theater in cinematic mode or spotlight (only if the lights are really, really bright). And I shoot in 24 fps because I like the film look and the video comes out brighter.

The G10 uses a new sensor that is AWESOME in low light!! I do almost all plays/concerts/shows…just did two this week (6 cams, total of 18 tracks in vegas!), and the camera looks incredible! Be sure to white balance at the brightest the lights will be and it should turn out well. I have had awesome results doing this, I worry more about shutter speed, white balance and exposure that fps for lighting…good luck!

Thanks a lot for the responses!
I used 24p last time but have been adjusting the exposure manually with the dial, based on the zebra patterns.
If i have time tonight i’ll do a test shoot based on what you suggested in regards to the auto iris.

    Thanks again!
