  • Vegas 9.0 & Quicktime 10 compatibility

    Hi,

So i’m working with both Quicktime 10 and Sony Vegas 9.0e and I’m having trouble tracking down the proper codec to open and edit the .mov files that Quicktime 10 outputs. When I check Movie Inspector after I have captured my files the format that it tells me is:

    16-bit Integer (Little Endian), 40. (L R L R), 32.00 kHz
    DV/DVCPRO – NTSC, 640 x 480, Millions

I’m wondering if anyone has had any success getting Quicktime 10 .mov’s to properly open in Sony Vegas 9.0e? Currently when I open the files in Vegas the video plays back fine but the audio is a string of sped up audio that is choppy.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

“So i’m working with both Quicktime 10…”

You must have a super secret inside track with Apple as the latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.9 (or something close to that) but definitely nowhere close to 10.

On a mac running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) Quicktime is at version 10.0

Post snow leopard quicktime and quicktime pro have been rolled into a single product called Quicktime Player X. It has all of the features of Quicktime Pro.

I’m currently testing the capture capabilities of it but am having trouble figuring out how to make the output files open and playback properly in Vegas.

This is just a guess but because the Mac is using a much newer version of QuickTime, Vegas won’t be able to open it.
Try rendering it out in ProRes and see if Vegas can open it that.

I’m actually looking for a capture solution that won’t require me to have to transcode my original capture assets into a different format just so I can edit properly. I need a scalable solution since I do a significant amount of capture, adding a step to my process where I have to re-encode my original assets would add too much time to the process to be a tenable solution.

I’m actually a little surprised that more hasn’t been written about Quicktime 10 since it has been in circulation for over 18 months.

    What format are you capturing?
Is there a reason you aren’t you doing this with Vegas directly and avoiding the transfer hassles?
Why aren’t you editing this on your Mac?

    I’m not.
Vegas is a PC app, not a Mac one so I personally wasn’t aware of the existence QT 10 as it doesn’t affect me.

I’ve used Vegas Vidcap in the past to do capture but in the last 6 months I’ve developed a problem with dropped frames using Vidcap. I’ve since switched my PC capture over to Adobe Premiere Capture and have cleared up my dropped frames problem. I’m currently exploring capture on a mac. I’ve also had some interesting problems capturing to FCP and then attempting to open up the output .mov’s in vegas but that is a separate problem I’ll be working on later.
