Vegas 9 Pro & *.mp4 videos?

You can’t put mp4’s into the timeline I have tried before as well it has to be a different format. Like avi but it seems that mp4 won’t work in SV.

Now that’s just plain silly. My son has a GoPro camera that shoots MP4 files. I can drop them straight onto the Vegas timeline – no issues at all.

Well… the 64-bit version will only be able to read videos if your have a corresponding 64-bit codec installed. Since Vegas 7 was 32-bit, it can read video that the 64-bit version cannot. So if the previous version of Vegas Pro 9.0 was 32-bit and this one is 64-bit it might explain why the video is black now but use to work fine.

Have you tried changing the preview settings? The Movie Studio version of Vegas has problem where video turns black and if you change the preview setting it magically re-appears.

It’s a matter of CODECs, for sure.

.MP4 needs a CODEC, or DirectShow filter in Windows-speak. These come in 32-bit and 64-bit flavor, too. So it’s quite possible to see .MP4 in a 32-bit version of Vegas, but not in a 64-bit version. And all bets are off if you move to a different PC.

With the proper system support, Vegas handles MP4 files just dandy. I have edited them many times.

Thank you all, for your most helpful replies. I am not up to speed on Codecs. Or on 32 or 64 bits. So two questions, please:
1. How can one tell which, 32 or 64 is the Vegas program?
2. How does one obtain a codec: buy, free download, or? and how does one “install” it, via Vegas, on its own via Windows as a separate program or…?

There are lots of ways to tell:

(1) The 64-bit version can only run on a 64-bit operating system so the first clue is are you using Windows 7 64-bit or Vista 64-bit. If not, you are using the 32-bit version.

(2) When you start Vegas Pro the 64-bit version will say, “Vegas Pro 9.0e (Build 1146) 64-bit” while the 32-bit version just says “Vegas Pro 9.0e (Build 1146)”

(3) If you have an icon on your desktop it will say “Vegas Pro 9.0 (64-bit)” if it’s 64-bit

2. How does one obtain a codec: buy, free download, or? and how does one “install” it, via Vegas, on its own via Windows as a separate program or…?

It depends on the codec. Some are free and others you have to purchase. Most will come with instructions on how to install them. Vegas will see them if they are VFW codecs and the same architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) as Vegas.

I checked as you suggested, it says 9.0b and no mention of 64. Further his Operating system is a dated Windows XP.
I guess that pins it down to a 32.

Yes it does. Now you need to get him to update to 9.0e so you can get all the bugs that were fixed in 9.0c and 9.0d and all the new features added to 9.0e!
