I had been using Pinnacle Studio for several years. However, I wanted to give Vegas Movie Studio a try.

I found that Vegas’ render quality is superior so the final output seems great. However, I have a lot of trouble with realtime playback. I can only keep the display setting on draft 1/2 size for it to play back somewhat smoothly.

Pinnacle on the other hand cache’s a rendered version after making changes and plays back beautifully in full quality.

Pinnacle is dependant upon the quality of the video card.
I am running with an nForce 8800 Ultra with 796mb on board RAM. I also have 4 gb RAM and using a Pentium D 3GHz.

    Any advice?

With very few exceptions, your video card has nothing to do with the performance of Vegas.
What does make a big difference is your CPU and obviously, the more powerful it is, the better your timeline playback will be.
The type of footage you’re trying to play back will also have an impact with AVCHD being the most difficult.
