New here, questions about Sony Vegas pro & Vista 64. I tried the trial of 8.0c and it worked fine on my XP 32bit machine. But I want to use it on a machine that has Vista 64. So I gave the trial a whirl there & while it works, it won’t let me toss a MOV file on. It says I don’t have Quicktime loaded. I’ve done all of the searching & everything leads me to the conclusion that I haven’t installed the Full App of Quicktime. From what I can tell that’s not applicable to Quicktime anymore as the install doesn’t ask you whether to install full or custom etc. And I installed it the same way on both the XP & Vista machines. I uninstalled it, rebooted, reinstalled & no difference. So I assume it’s a Vista 64 issue. Then I found that Vegas 8.1 is the recommended version for 64 bit OS. The problem is there’s no trial version of that app.

So can anyone tell me how well 8.1 works on Vista 64? I don’t want to buy it without trying it, but I can’t try it. Or is there anyone that has had the same issue I’m having on a Vista 64 machine with MOV files and has overcome it?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Of course the trial is available, here is the link:

For you to take the trial for a spin…And make sure you
download and install the latest version of quicktime.

Not many plug-ins work with 8.1 if any. On my system it actually renders slower and previews are not as good as 8.0c. I have 8.1, and never use it. I think it was put out as a pacifier, or to put a fire under the 3rd party plug-in makers in preparation of SONY VEGAS PRO 9(dreamware). I will probrably get blasted for saying so, but this is what I think. LOL

That is a download, but not a trial. It’s actually an upgrade. After installing that when you run the app it asks for a serial # from a qualifying product.

I guess the solution is to either downgrade to 32bit Vista or XP. Is there any reason to put Vista on at all? At this point this is a new machine so I’m not losing anything by changing OS, other then my 6GB RAM is wasted.

I have found 8.1 to be quite a bit faster to render. Previews are excellent. I am previewing multiple streams in real time at ‘best-full’. I do have to kick it down for transitions, but that’s to be expected. So far, seems to be rock solid. If I need my plug-ins, I use 8c as they co-exist on my 64 bit machine.

been using 8.1 on V64 business since it came out. Have 8c but hardly use it. no problems with .mov or any other file, so far.

I recently built up a big machine with an Intel Quad core processor, 8GB of RAM, and Vista 64. I then installed Sony Vegas Pro 8.1 on it. It’s about 7 times faster then rendering with my old laptop with 2GB of RAM.

However, it locks up incessantly, and randomly. It may lock up while the splash screen is still displaying. Just never finishes loading. Or it may lock up when I click the Pause button while previewing something in the trimmer. Or it may lock up when I click Play on the main timeline. Or I might go to dinner while it is just sitting there, and when I come back and try to do something, it locks up. Pretty infuriating to have to do a SAVE every time you do the slightest thing. And constantly having to load the Task Manager to blow the thing off and start over. Arrggghhh.

Other than this one application, I have to say that Vista 64 is much more stable with 8GB than the 32-bit OS was.

Vegas 8.1 is horrible on Vista 64 bit. I have Vegas 8.0c on a 32 bit Vista machine and it is great – I upgraded my 64 bit Vista machine to 8.1 and the speed is terrible – they released 8.1 without realizing the problems it had. Just get 8.0c and you will love it – you can always upgrade to 8.1 at no cost – just wait until they get it fixed.
