I remember editing HDV footage with Vegas 8.0b and it did smart-render both for pre-renders and for final renders. I remember that for the parts it didn’t need to render the monitor window would go black and it said something at the bottom to note that it didn’t need recompressing, and then it only showed the footage that needed so, such as transitions, filters, etc.

Now I’m editing HDV on 8.1 and while a pre-render to the HDV module is a snap thanks to smart-render, the final render is recompressing every single frame. “Enable no-recompress long GOP rendering” is checked in the preferences, so what’s the deal? 8.1 doesn’t support smart-render for final renders? Why would it support it for pre-renders, but not for final renders?

    Interesting,
Maybe another issue that needs to be ironed out.

[Steve Rhoden] “Maybe another issue that needs to be ironed out.”

I think Sony Creative Software needs to be ironed out. I just installed 8.0c and it does smart-render to the final file. So what’s the point of having paid Microsoft $11 for the 64 bit Vista DVD and gone through the long process of converting my system to 64 bit when now I have to keep using the same old chock full of bugs 8.0c? Simply pathetic.

It is a sad but true that the users are the beta testers for software and hardware. We have allowed it and I don’t see it changing anytime soon. So it is up to us to figure out the work arounds amongst ourselves in the hopes that the issues will be fixed in the next latest and greatest update. The more solutions that we find the better it is for all of us. Depending on how we use the application we may never encounter a single problem, others are not so fortunate. Sorry there is not much solace in that but it is the reality. I am very thankful that people in this forum take time to help anyone at any level.
