Vegas 6.0 “Lost Codec”
Posted by Steve Edwards on May 28, 2009 at 3:33 pmI have recently noticed that when I go to render, there is nothing there in the way of choices for Mpeg2. Also if I want to render as MP4 it tells me there is no template for that. What’s going on?

May 28, 2009 at 3:55 pmDo you have DVD Architect installed? That brings you the MPEG2 codec…

May 28, 2009 at 4:00 pmAlso, there are two MPEG4 encoders, Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC, do both of these have no templates? If it’s just the MainConcept AVC and MainConcepot MPEG-2 that are missing templates, then it might be that some other software on your system has corrupted (or uninstalled) the MainConcept codecs? (just a shot in the dark)

May 28, 2009 at 4:48 pmMain Concept AVC/AAC (MP4) Shows no template
Sony AVC/AAC (MP4) Shows no template either
And there are no Mpeg 2 choices at all. Also John, did you see my post on New Deshaker fo Vegas 8 Pro? If not please take a look at and see if you maybe have an answer for that also. Thanks alot! -

May 28, 2009 at 6:40 pmIt’s hard to say what might be wrong. I know that installing the Adobe CS4 Suite on my Vista 64 machine really messed things up. Adobe also installs it’s own MainConcept codecs so this might have something to do with it but my MainConcept templates are fine in Vegas.
As for DeShaker, I don’t use it. I use Mercalli because it plugs right in (sorry).

May 28, 2009 at 11:08 pmThe New Deshaker for Vegas 8 Pro also plugsin to Vegas, like Mercalli.
In your opinion, is Mercalli worth the money, and does it actually do a good job? I seem to have heard more positve comments on Deshaker, than I have Mercalli. As for the codec problem, any suggestions? Where are the codecs stored in Vegas, and can I copy a codec from Adobe, and it work in Vegas. If I have to reload Vegas 6, will it affect any files that are currently being used by Vegas. Is there a place on the internet that I can downoad those codecs?
Thanks John -

May 29, 2009 at 3:38 amMercalli does a great job and DeShaker does too. I used DeShaker all the time before I bought Mercalli. I just used it stand-alone in VirtualDub. I never used the automated script for it from Vegas.
I’m sure there are circumstances that DeShaker handles better and others that Mercalli handles better. I also have Magic Bullet Steady which works really well too (it’s an After Effects plug-in). You can’t go wrong with any of them. I’ll tell you that I bought the pro version of Mercalli and I have never used the advanced interface. Usually the presets are fine for the kind of shake that I usually need to remove so the standard $50 version should be adequate in most circumstances. For $50 you can’t go wrong… it’s less than tank of gas for an SUV. 😉
I haven’t a clue how to fix the codec problem. If a re-install of Vegas doesn’t fix it then you need to call Sony technical support. The template should be there after a re-install. Good Luck,
