Just trying to find out if Vegas 6 users are happy with their DeckLink workflow. I need to do work with Betacam SP and DV in the same project and want to know if Vegas/DeckLink will allow me to ingest both formats, edit in uncompressed and output back to Beta SP.

    Hi Franklin,

Past postings to this forum indicate that some people love Vegas 6 for its capabilities and because it is very different to other NLE’s. Some people who have become used to other NLE’s don’t like the different way that it works compared with other NLE’s. We think it’s great to have choice and variety so you can choose the NLE that suits you.

Sony Vegas 6 controls DeckLink cards via our DirectShow support built into our drivers. Currently Vegas uses our 8 and 10 bit uncompressed formats for capture and playback and this will work fine with both digital and analog decks. If you use a DeckLink SP or DeckLink Extreme card, you can connect to your Betacam SP for uncompressed capture and playback.

Sony Vegas 6 does not currently support capture to a DV movie via DeckLink cards but I received another query about that today so we’ll ask Sony if they would add that in a future update as our DirectShow filters support that. However if you have captured a DV file some other way, eg via Firewire, you will be able to play it out through the DeckLink card and that means you could output it as uncompressed video to a Digibeta or Betacam SP. Please note that DV files from some sources will need to be rendered before you can output via the DeckLink card. However any DV file captured by DeckLink, eg via Premiere Pro, can be immediately played out in Vegas 6 without rendering.

“DV can be immediately played out in Vegas 6 without rendering”

This ist noch exactly right. Vegas has the same problem playing back DV Clips in PAL as PremierePro. The DV “lower Field” ist different from the PAL “upper field”, the Decklink-Cards don

Thanks, Luke. A little more clarification, please. So I can place DV clips captured through FireWire (Vegas capture program) and Beta SP captured through DeckLink SP (Vegas capture program) on the same 8 or 10 bit uncompressed timeline and play out real time to a Beta SP deck, correct?

First on my wish list is for the new drivers to handle pulldown with 24p DV timelines again. It works in 4.8.1 but having the option for FrameLink would be nice.

i do not have a decklink card .. however i do use Vegas to edit and render projects that are then used to go out to digibeta and beta SP using decklink cards on other computers … to use decklink cards in other computers you’ll need to render using the BM codec .. if out to digibeta then render using BM 10 bit .. if going out to beta sp then render using BM 8 bit ..

note that if you use V6 capture utility with decklink that digibeta will capture as 8 bit uncompressed 4:2:2 ( using sony YUV codec) NOT 10 bit .. if you want 10 bit then cature using decklinks capture utility which will then use BM codec.

if all you souce material is beta Sp and DV and you are going out to beta Sp you will not have any 10 bit clips … beta Sp needs 8bit to go to beta deck… if by chance you do have 10 bit uncompressed clips mixed with uncompressed 8 bit and DV clips my guess is you’ll have to render or pre-render to play in RT out thru decklink ??

again my experience is rendering on Vegas using BM codec ( render 10bit for digibeta deck.. 8bit for beta sp deck).. then taking the hard drive to a post house .. they use a PC to load in my rendered clip ( usually 50-100gigs) over their gigabyte network to their MAC hard drives – then they transfer to digibeta using their decklink card..
