  • Vegas 12 / Win8 – Freezes and lockup during rendering

    My computer specs:
    Intel Q6600 quadcore
    8GB RAM
    ATI 6900 series (2GB RAM)
    Creative X-Fi

I upgraded from Vegas 10 to 12 recently. Vegas 10 was working fine. I am trying to render my project with the Mainconcept HD Internet 1080p template with GPU enabled. Rendering will freeze randomly. Sometimes it will get up to 50% done, then freeze. (Note: The elapsed time and approx. time left continues to count down.)

The whole Vegas app freezes, and I can’t even use Taskmgr to end it. I have to reboot my system. I just did a completely new install of Windows 8 Pro, and finished all updates, and made sure all my firmware/bios is updated. No other apps loaded except for my Spyder4Pro for color calibration.

I reviewed Windows Event logs, but nothing related to Vegas. There is only an App Error for Logitech Setpoint driver, and something about a lsass.exe system file. My HDD’s are okay though. Any thoughts?

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

Looks like I’m going to have to call Sony Support in the morning. No matter what codec I choose, the rendering randomly freezes. I did notice, that the Preview memory was at 200. When I changed it to “0”, it rendered a lot more, and also the preview window is smoother. But it still froze, before it got to the end of the rendering. Tried other projects files that I had in my collection with same outcome.

All this happening since you upgraded your system to Windows 8?

So it seems like the problem was the X-Fi audio card drivers for win8. I tried some third party ASIO drivers and was now able to complete rendering twice with no problems.

I really need to get a more professional sound card anyway. Are there any you would suggest for home studios? I am looking to replace all my consumer level equipment with more professional solutions.

It would be easier on you to simply stick with Windows 7 on your
editing computer. As in many of my posts on this subject, this
is one of reasons i always recommend to never upgrade ones editing
computer to a brand new OS.
