    HI;

    I do video editing for my personal projects and for a small business that I work on with a good friend. I’m experiencing some glitches with Vegas 12 and am hoping someone may have some suggestions.

    I’ve been using Vegas Movie Studio 11 for some time now and it has done everything I’ve needed it to do. Only thing I’ve been uphappy about is that my live / realtime previews were often not smooth and lagged unless in low quality. (I blamed this on my older i7 2.8 with 16GB of ram).

    So I had a new box built in a 2011 socket board and a 3820 i7 with 32Gb ram and a Cherryville SSD. I had them put in a GTX 650 because I just couldn’t figure out if a higher end card than that would help with video editing. I installed Vegas studio 12 on the new system, since 12 was suppose to make better use of more memory and GPU acceleration. (I’ve not tried installing 11 on this new system)

    (Note: Much of the video I work with needs to have precise cuts / alignment and I really need to be able to see good quality previews to know where to make my edits.)

    Depending on the files I work with most of my live previews are reasonably smooth in best / auto. A lot seems to depend on what camera it is from. The 125Mb a minute files from my Phone and the 100Mb /min from my HD camcorder seem to be a lot more difficult for it to live preview smoothly than the 300Mb+ /min files from my 7d.

    I do wish the real time preview was a bit smoother and can’t really figure out what limit I’m hitting when the live preview isn’t smooth (I’ll check and the CPU, GPU, disk are not maxed out, but I will have glitches in my preview).

    I’ve read a lot of posts and am wondering if this is just general glitches with version 12 that a lot of people have seen. I’ve even read some people say that the Adobes editor previews much more smoothly than that of Vegas 12. (I’m not really wanting to switch at this point, but if I had to, I could).

    I can live with the less than perfect live preview if I have to, but it’s kind of frustrating since it (having smooth previews) was the main reason that I bought this new $2000+ editing / computer setup.

    Is that much anything I could tweak / upgrade that would make my previews smoother? (e.g. a different graphic card)

    My second concern is that with Vegas 12 I’ve had a number of times now when I go to do something like start to render or add fx that Vegas quits and I get an “Vegas has unexpectedly terminated, please send a report….” and it gives me no more details about what happened. When I restart the program it normally recovers my project and I can continue. I would say this has happened at least 8 times in the last 2 weeks. In the previous couple years that I used Vegas 10/11 on my old system I can really only even remember it crashing a couple times total. Any thoughts on what might be going on here?

    I’m just on a trial on 12 and I know it isn’t expensive, but if I would be better off going back to 11 or going to a different editor, I’d rather not waste the money on 12.

    Thanks very much;

    If you are using Best/Auto try using Preview/Auto. This should be smoother and still have enough quality to edit accurately. Also make sure that your project properties match your media properties. Especially frame rates and interlace settings.

    Check that your Dynamic RAM Preview is set to the default of 200. I’ve seen Vegas Pro 12.0 become unstable when it’s set higher. Also try turning off GPU Acceleration in Options | Preferences. The 6xx Series NVIDIA of cards have been causing a lot of problems.

    Thank You very much for your prompt response. I apologize for my late response, my AT&T Internet connection flaked out on me this week and I had to wait 2 days to get a tech out before I was all back up and running again.

    I’ll do some video editing this weekend and will see if these setting changes help. I know I have the dynamic ram preview set to around 8,000; which I had assumed would be fine since I had the physical ram available to do that.

    Thank you;

    Well Dynamic RAM Preview steals memory from rendering so if you are having rendering problems I would set it back to the default just to see if it helps.

    I do have 32GB of physical ram, so I’m pretty sure I was a long ways from running out.

    I did some testing with the Dynamic ram preview set very low and the video seems to preview very well for most projects.

    If I have something more complex on the story board it can’t preview quite as smoothly; and it’s these cases that I had wanted to use the Dynamic Ram Preview for. But I guess I am going to have to assume that this is a bug with Vegas 12 that you can allot a large amount of memory to the dynamic ram preview even if you have the memory available in your system.

    Overall form the testing I’ve done with the Dynamic Ram Preview set to 200MB of ram the whole program seems to be running quite well. So far I’ve not had it crash on me again at this point.

    Does anyone have any idea when the next version of Vegas is going to be out? Think it will be a while till we are at 13?

    Thanks again;

    This is why I suggested it. 😉 I have observed the same thing so I now keep my Dynamic RAM Preview at 200 and Vegas Pro 12.0 is very stable.

    Thanks again John. I’ve done a bit more work today and it appears all is still well.

    I’ve been so busy lately, my head has been in the clouds a bit. I appreciate your time and patience.

    John, I have a follow-up question on this.

    I too have 32GB or RAM in my system, so setting large amount of RAM for preview is not a problem. If I set my ram preview back to 200MB, then I can only preview about 10-15 seconds of footage before it stops (as in stops buildingthe RAM preview, not crashing). My footage is all SD, PAL DV (720 x 576), with no effects, but only some cross-fades and an MP3 audio track.

    What should I expect 200MB of ram preview to give me?

    I have Vegas 12 PRO, wind 7 65 bit ultimate, i7, 32GB of RAM.

    Thanks.

    [Stewart Bourke] “What should I expect 200MB of ram preview to give me?”

    RAM Preview was meant to preview particularly difficult parts like transitions. If you are getting 10-15 seconds of preview at 200MB that is plenty of time to view a difficult transition or complex section. If you need RAM preview just to play SD PAL video, then you have some serious problems with your PC. It must be very underpowered. I can play back full HD AVCHD with no RAM preview on my workstation.

    John,

    It is clear now that I have been ‘misusing’ the RAM preview. I have been using it preview several minutes of a video… I can playback SD in realtime without previewing no problem – but if I add some effects it does drop down to half-quality and can become quite ‘stuttery’ – particularly if I add many of the BCC effects (rays for example). Sometime I might have several effects on a track – chroma key, some rays, maybe some brightness/contract tweaks etc) and then preview is very slow/laggy.

    My machine is an I7 3930K, ASUS P9X7P motherboard, 32GB RAM, SSD OS, SSD APPs and 4TB raid 5 for rendering with Windows 7 Ultimate and a GTX670.

    I take it so that the only real way to ‘preview’ properly is to render to disk and then view the render, or is there another way to do an ‘in-memory’ render and view that? I have been setting my ram preview to 8GB and was able to preview 10-12 minutes..

    Thanks
