Vegas 12: Hype Vs Reality – Weigh In
I hate to start things off pounding on the negatives of Vegas 12 but I have run in to a few major disappointments so far.
1) Effects masking is severely limited. It only allows for one active effects chain. If you want to color correct inside a vignette mask and outside you have to go back to duplicating tracks which basically is abandoning the new effects masking altogether anyway. This applies to their simple statement of blurring out a face/logo as well. That is the ONLY thing you can do. The rest of the image will remain unable to be transformed by effects in any way. You will have to add a render to your workflow or go back, as just stated, to multi-track masking. I was hoping to use advanced effects masking in conjunction with Neat Video for targeted smoothing. Since I almost always have color corrections this is not possible with the New! (hype sarcasm alert) effects masking. My first thought was that position left or right of the Pan/Crop might be my problem but it was not. Any effects on the opposite side of the Pan/Crop chain are IGNORED because the image is ONLY the mask + effects and the original image.
2) I have yet to find an After Effects project (saved out as .prproj) that can be imported. I was not expecting total functionality but I am guessing that only simple edits can be transported back and forth… and that is not what After Effects is needed for.
3) Crashes are still occurring while dealing with time stretched events, either during playback or rendering. These are intermittent and pretty random so you never know when an event will cause problems.
4) Project properties will not default to the ACES color space being off. All new project properties start with ACES (srgb) even after the “start all new projects” check box has been used. This is not a huge deal but small things like this can add up to major irritations over time.
5) For me .mxf (main) preview at 1920x in Vegas 11 was real time but in 12 it is dropping 8-12 frames constantly. This is on a single camera edit timeline. Preview (half) is sufficient so I am dealing accordingly.
Unfortunately, now that I think about it, all the things that excited me about Vegas 12 are not exciting anymore and the positives (stability… sort of) had been fixed by Vegas 11’s last update.
So where I have failed others must strive to succeed…. what are the positives (without hype) of Vegas 12?
