  • Vegas 12 – did they changed the way you copy FX from a clip to another ?

After using 9, 10, 11 in the past years I upgraded to Vegas 12 and noticed a bit of an annoying change.

Prior to 12, whenever I had a project with a lot of clips on the timeline, and I used COPY/Paste Attributes between the clips, it ADDED the FX of the source clip ( copied ) to the FX already on the destination clip. Now for some reason, it copies the FX and REPLACES the destination’s FX with the new ones. It’s a bit annoying because, I first do the color correcting work which works differently for each clip and them decide to ADD something to all of them ( contrast, glow etc ). Hope it does make sense.

Now it seems that I can’t do it anymore. If the destination had 4 FX on it and the source one has only one, by copying and pasting attributes, it replaces the 4 FX I already worked on the destination clip with just the one on the source one. I kinda understand the logic, but since so far it worked by adding Fx instead of replacing them, why change it all now. It drives me nuts.

Is there a setting anywhere that could change this back to the way it was on Vegas 11 for example ? Thanks

No, nothing in the “front-facing” User interface. And yes, this was changed in VP12.

Personally? I’d like a warning and selection Menu to allow me to pick-off that which I would want Adding-To as a result of Paste Event Attributes.

A Creative experience is about making choices – this process does not allow for this. The SCS Programmers need to be made aware of this.

Use this LINK to give yourself the option to bring it to SONY’s attention!

The implementation of the current thing is stupid to say the least. If they don’t address it in a firmware update I will have to rollback to Vegas 11. I upgraded because I changed my video card from nVidia to Ati and seems that V12 has a better support for ATI cards. Damn … can’t have the cake and eat it too it seems 🙂

I think I know the reasoning behind this change. A lot of times I would end up with 2 color corrections, or 2 color curves when I copied and pasted Event Attributes. Vegas was adding an Event Attribute when I really did want it to “Replace” an Event Attribute.

An option that pops up and asks “add” or “Replace” for each event selected would be nice. Most important when the event already has the effect you are trying to paste onto it. Much like the question “Create a new copy of source media” or “Create a reference to the original media” you get when copying events.

Has anyone noticed that when pasting attributes to multiple events sometimes all you get is the effect but without any settings? When I paste “Color Curves” onto multiple events.. I check later to find the effect was pasted but the curve is just a straight line and the correction I was expecting was not added. This has been bugging me for some time now.

Ok. I might have missed something in the initial question…. but why don’t you render your clip with the FX, and then add that to the track?

Hi Sam – well, it could work like you said but that means I am forced to add the final effect to the ENTIRE TRACK and sometimes I have a 1.5 hrs track and want to add a certain general effect or look to only have of it.

I understand that sometimes I ended up with the same effects 2 times on the same scene, and although it was annoying, I realized that was generated by a user mistake and I went back and fixed it 🙂

I find it way more more difficult like it is now, where I am being in danger of cancelling all my previous scene scpeific FX work in order to paste-in new general ones.

A dialog box would be pretty awesome – but if that’s too much to ask, I would go with the old behavior in a heartbeat, hence the reason why I am currently working with Vegas 11 again as I don’t have the time to figure out a different workflow than I am used to just to bypass this change.
