Vegas 10 Preview setting – problem?
Let me start off by saying – I’m new to this software…editing project was handed to me (the creative) when the other guy left. I have a general idea of how this program works – however am having a horrible time with preview.
I have the preview set to Best Full. I have unchecked adjust size to optimal. However when I play the video I still get the “choppy unsynced looking preview: – I actually have to CLICK on the “Best Full” (and get the drop down) for the Best Full preview to “activate”. Of course it goes back to choppy the minute I click off.
Any ideas? I’ve reinstalled just in case – I’m on Vegas 10.

Playback is dependent on your hardware (mainly CPU, Disk throughput). You will benefit from adjusting your playback to Preview Auto. This is the setting I mainly leave my editing system at as it results in great playback and decent quality.
Of course, when you render, the sharpness will not be affected by the preview setting. The settings there only affect what you are viewing while editing (again, it does not affect your final product).

right – but leaving it on Preview auto I get a preview that I can’t work with – the audio is completely out of sync with the video so I can’t tell if my changes are correct. (Acutally this is the same I get on BEST FULL – unless I click it and make the menu drop down)

There are two things for you to be aware of.
The first was a “feature” that was introduced in Pro 9.
Vegas can now automatically adjust the video preview size and quality to optimize frame rate during preview.
Right-click the Video Preview window and select Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback if you want to emphasize frame rate during preview. When the command is not selected, video quality is emphasized, and the frame rate will be reduced if necessary.The second is that you can do a RAM render (highlight a section and press Shift+B) to accurately see and hear what’s going on.
The length of the RAM render is determined by how much RAM you’ve assigned to this task.
The setting for it is found in Options – Prefs – Video.You can also do a Selective Pre-Render (highlight a section and press Shift+M) to a specific file format and not be limited by the amount of RAM you have.
Make sure to set your Preview monitor to Best/Full before doing either of these.

I mentioned I had already unchecked the “Adjust size and Quality” – it didn’t help the problem.
I have alotted 1 gig of ram to the render process. I want to just be able to play the preview like normal and get the BEST FULL preview.
I have done a pre-render and it gives me the same results – the audio and video are out of sync.
Is this not possible to preview like I want for some reason? Because it’s not working.
My ex co-worker ran these same files just fine in version 8. (Personal version we no longer have)

What type of files are you working with? It sounds like AVCHD which is processor intensive. Do you have a lot of fx (or any) on the footage? That can definitely slow it down. If you did a Ram preview and still have the issue then something is wrong as that should allow you to view as much on the timeline as the RAM will allow for (could be 4 seconds, could be 20 seconds or something else).
If you move the footage after the RAM preview or cut it or add something to it or take something away you lose the RAM preview.
