Veg File save location
Posted by Mike Hinkel on March 20, 2011 at 11:53 pmWhere is the best place to save veg files? I noticed that Vegas 10 defaults them to
C:\\Users\AppData\Local\Sony\Vegas\10.0\.veg
When searching for the files using all of the key words it comes up empty. Are these hidden files? I need to move them where I can find the dang things.

I save all of my .veg files in my project folder on my RAID which is my E: drive. Every project starts with a project folder. Every piece of media that project uses is copied into that project folder. Every save of a .veg file is to that project folder. There is no guesswork. I know where my project is.

March 21, 2011 at 12:26 amI do the same thing as John, I also keep my pictures in a separate folder (if I am using any), additional audio files their own folder, and also do split up any camera angles ( I sometimes will do up to 7 camera angles on some shoots) into their own folder (such as pit cam, jib cam, etc), and even save FX presets into a folder sometimes as well, so I ALWAYS know where to look for a project’s file, no matter what type!
In addition, I also save .veg files in steps as well, as in:
insert name-Pre-edit.veg
insert name-editing.veg
insert name-with fx.veg
etc…..
this way if I get a corrupt file, or need to backtrack to a previous big edit point, I can.
I would also backup to an external drive per project. I do this in case I have a major crash, lightning strike, etc, I will then back up my .veg files as well to the same drive periodically as well.
This may seem like a lot of time, but it has saved me on a number of occasions and also protects and client files. If I have to start from scratch on a project again..all the costs I would need to absorb…that would suck!!
Good luck!Scott Francis

March 21, 2011 at 1:38 amI guess my question is why does Vegas install and have the default save to a file i cannot acces. The only place i see the location is in the save as box when saving. I never changed the save box as I did in earlier versions. I am fortunate that I can move the files to an external drive until i can figure out how to set up my RAID.
I crashed so much that most of the learning stuff didn’t get renamed. I need to open them all to see just what I have. I am still at wits end with BCC7

March 21, 2011 at 1:59 amthese are hidden folders….. you need to set windows to view hidden folders. I always use “save as” and select drive and location to save the .veg file too…

March 21, 2011 at 2:06 amScott, I did that in the past, but failed to realize that I didn’t think of the viewing my hidden files option when I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the .veg files moved to an external drive where i will save to from here on out. Thanks for your help.

March 21, 2011 at 2:11 amYeah…I have done that, Windows 7 is great, but they changed things just enough to be a pain sometimes! Be sure that your external is fast enough, depending on media codec’s and track count. I can do a little editing on a USB 2 drive, but try to use esata when at all possible…honestly I have 8 TB of space internally I just use external that is disconnected and stored for a safe backup….
In any case no problem with the help and good luck!!Scott Francis

March 21, 2011 at 2:39 amTo save everything so all files in the project are saved, like to another drive or so you can open it from another computer with the same ver of vegas or newer, check copy media at the bottom of the save as window and tell it where you want to save it to.

March 21, 2011 at 2:43 amThanks Scott, it seems I really do need to go back to square one and dedicate the whole computer to editing. I have to see if I can put eSata ports in or get another internal drive to take advantage of the Raid utility. I am using USB 2.0 external drives which will become back up only.
Thanks for the tip Danny!

March 21, 2011 at 12:11 pmOne one of my computers that does not have built in esata, I just got an adapter those lets me go from an internal sata to an esata bracket that goes into an empty bracket on the back of the computer. It is NOT hot swappable…so I have to make sure my external drive is on before I start up the computer and also never turn it off when the computer is on…but it saves buying an esata adapter card and gives me the speed I need…

March 21, 2013 at 4:59 pmHello John,
You seem to know an awful lot about this software so I thought I would come to you….
Right now i have Sony Vegas 9c.
To create a new video what I do is browse to a file i named template.vf
create a folder and this is now where my video will be located.
(the template.vf is because i see no way of creating templates for videos in this software).
Now every item I record gets sent to my user/documents folder.I have browsed the web and through every setting i can find and I see no option remotely close to allowing me to change a default save directory.
With the previous version i did the same thing and vegas saved the files in a sub-directory called ‘Recordings’ located within the folder I created.
The last video I created went something like this:
1. Record 2 tracks of audio…
2. Browse to documents
3. move tracks to the folder created for the video
4. error message from vegas not knowing where there media files are
5. tell vegas where the files are
6. record a couple more tracks
7. repeat steps 2-5I am not sure why this version is reacting the way it is… but I am only here because my irritation level has hit a peak resulting in me doing research into different software’s with the same capability as vegas.
ANY help would be much appreciated, Thank you VERY much!!
