Hi All, hoping someone can help, tearing my hair out here.

I’ve been using C4D for some time now on a basic level, but i’m having a problem on and off with importing vector files in to C4D.

I am attempting in this instance to trace a jpeg logo (No eps available) and import the vectored output from illustrator in to c4d, i am deleting backgrounds etc as far as i can. However when i bring the file in to C4D and apply an extrude nurb, sometimes and not always the centre of say a shape, that looks in illustrator as though it has been mapped with a path, is solid in c4d.

I really need some help with this as i cannot figure out how to ‘make the hole appear’ extruded in c4d.

This can happen if the splines making up a single shape are separate. For example, if you have the letter “e”, the hole in the e may be a separate spline from the rest of the letter. If that’s the case, multi-select them and run the connect command to turn them into a single spline. Then it should extrude with the hole.

    Hi Adam
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my post. However i’ve tried what you’ve suggested, ‘multi selecting’ and then connecting the splines, but this doesn’t seem to have any effect. I also select ‘connect splines’ when i import the file in to C4D.

Is there something that i could be doing wrong in Illustrator which would cause the file to import incorrectly in the first place?

With this file i’ve traced it from a low res jpeg, in AI, then deleted background and surrounding boxes etc. The paths are present in AI, but as mentioned it isn’t extruding ‘the centre’ in the letters. It is saved as an AI file in the AI 8 format. Plus i can’t type the text as it’s designed and not standard font.

You’re exporting with no fill or stroke? Can you post the file?

Once again thanks for your posts. However i think i’ve just found the solution to my long-standing mystery. It seems that there must be some sort of tolerance aspect to paths and anchor points. If i add more anchor points to the path of a shape, instead of appearing as just a ‘line’ it creates the shape when extruded in c4d.

I have been working with fairly small files in AI, i don’t know why as they’re vectors! And i presume that not enough anchor points have been getting added for the path to be recognised in c4d.

    Thanks again.
