    Hi all,

We are currently doing the budget for a short film that we are going to submit for funding (for here in Quebec, public funds are almost the only way to get money). We want the most professional result for the best price. The producer definitely ruled out film and the director wants to use this short film to try to get funding for a TV series (which would most likely be shot on HD) so he wants it produced using similar tools.

After a bit of research, the Varicam seems to me to be the best way to go in order to get a final product that could be usable for HDTV broadcasting, but at a reasonable price. I still have some unanswered questions about the post-production workflow with that format.

I’ve read that you can capture the footage through firewire to DVCPRO HD codec using the Panasonic hd1200 deck. Would the footage captured this way be appropriate to do some sort of online work (color correction, titling, no FX)and master back to DVCPRO HD and maybe also HDCAM or any other format broadcasters might require? Or would we need to generate a EDL/AAF/MXF list and recapture our final edit at a better format using HD-SDI? If so, are both Avid and FCP equipped to recognize the real frames from the pulldown through HD-SDI, or is it a FW only feature? (we are still not sure which system to use for editing)

Does that capture through FW give you the same kind of file that you get from the HVX-200 (not in terms of format, but in terms of quality)? Because I’ve done plenty of work with P2 files and often noticed banding problems and blocky compression artifacts in dark or black areas.

The budget would greatly benefit from an “online free” workflow, but I’m still not fully convinced and think that spending 2-3 days in a real online suite might be worth it.

    Sorry for the long post.
    Thanks for your answers.

Yes- same format but of course the Varicam shoots a considerably sharper picture from way better optics. So you might be surprised at the level of quality coming from an HVX200.
