  • Varicam post on Avid Media Composer with 24p and other off speed footage.

Looking for insight into the ability for Avid Media Composer with Adrenalin HD V 2.1.5 to edit 24p and other frame rates like 12p or 48p.
I am working with a post boutique that is just starting their learning curve for HD and they aren’t sure where to begin when it comes to variable frame rates.

They are inputting my Varicam footage via a 1200a via firewire.

Any experience on settings, software etc.?

You are in for a ride.
Avid Only natively supports 24p and 30p data rates from the 1200a deck via Firewire. So your post house will need to rent the Hardware FRC to convert your off speed footage to a format that the Avid can understand. Currently only Final Cut supports the Variable Frame Rate Capture over FW.

The Hardware Frame Rate Converter will properly convert your 12fps /48fps frame content to 24p for ingest into the Avid.

I’m need to do the same thing…except I’m offlining in Avid @ SD and onlining in FCP HD.

Why not edit in FCP? We already have six Xpro stations with staff editors that are Avid fans.

I am going to rent the FRConverter and input my 48 and 60 overcrank into the avid along with all the other 24p.
If I want to play my 48 and 60 as normal speed can I have two copies in my offline? One converted and one not?

I’ll then cut the show as normal.

Anyone ever taken this type of sequence to FCP for finish? Auto duck or edl better?

When I redig can I decompose the seq and isolate the 48 and 60 and dig those clips seperately based on the hand labeled clip speed in my bin?

Am i asking for it in the kisser?

    Thanks
