varicam footage being imported at 960 X 720? why?
hello team,
i have some footage that was captured at dvc pro HD, shot with the varicam. In after effects and shake it says the frame size is 1280 X 720 (as it should be). But when imported in to FCP, the dialogue box tells me the footage is 960 X 720. Im confused as to why FCP is seeing this footage at a different frame size than other programs. Any thoughts?
Im using the Kona 3 card and have tried different easy setups. but no matter what preset i use the footage still comes in and is recognized as 960 X 720.

Varicam…well, DVCPRO HD in general really, is ANAMORPHIC. That means that on the tape the image is stretched vertically, but FCP corrects for that when you drop it into the timeline.
If you create your graphics at 1280×720, they should match fine. Mine do.

Because the DVCPRO-HD codec cheats the frame size to get the bitrate down. So it really records 960 pixels and tells QT to stretch it out to 1280…. like pseudo anamorphic

it’s not pseudo anything.
Cx2 does not bother to mention that ALL HD tapes do this very same thing.
Sony will not release their native tape compression maybe they do not want everyone to find out that it’s actually 1440×1080 at 3:1:1 on the camera tapes.gary adcock

HDCAM-SR is full 1920×1080 to tape though.

Cx2’s use of psudo meant that it’s a similar concept to anamorphic but not technicicaly the same thing or same application as say, anamorphic 16:9 NTSC. No need to get defensive. And yes, as already mentioned by Borjis not ALL HD tapes do the same thing. HDCam SR is the full 1920×1080. So is D5 and D6 (albeit no cameras for those ginourmous tapes).

True Sean, I should have said “camera” tapes, — The D6 comment made me smile however- were any of of those decks produced that ever made it to an edit bay?

Hell I don’t even know what they look like. I’ve just heard they were the only uncompressed HD tape.
I don’t think anyone will be using tapes for very much longer. Its definitely going down that path. Good riddance if you ask me.
