what do i need to know about shooting in 24P on the varicam and then going to an SD edit. how does the true 24 frame that the varicam records translate when using SD timeline in FCP? I shoot mainly with an SDX 900 and that scans 24P and records to tape at 29.97 so there is no difference in FCP. thoughts?

How do you plan on digitizing the footage? We’ll start there.

the client edits in SD… we are shooting in HD… we will digitize through a dvc pro 50 deck. panasonic, via SDI and/or component, depending on which system we use.. we have FCP and DPS velocity in house.

Okay, if you are shooting HD, how are you going to digitize with a dv50 deck?

What they need to do is rent a 1200a DVCPRO HD deck with the SD-SDI downconvert option installed. That way, they can capture your HD tapes through SD-SDI. There will be a 3:2 pulldown added to the footage, but it will none the less be SD. What YOU (the shooter) needs to decide if you are going to frame while shooting for widescreen (so that the down-converted SD material will be letterboxed) or are you going to frame for 4:3 so that they can do a center cut when editing and have it be straight 4:3 no letterbox.

If you do not have SDI ingest capability, you can set up the 1200a to downconvert through firewire and capture that way as well. The SD-SDI should give you a bit of a quality bump.

    Does this help?

    yes thank you,

we are going to do some downconverts in the field as well. we are going to record on HD masters, and downconvert through a AJA 10MD3 and record that to a dvc pro 50 deck as well.

i would like to shoot in a way that accomodates a 4X3 edit but still looks acceptable in 16X9.

    thanks,

Then you’ll have to set up guides in your viewfinder for a 4:3 crop. When you set up to downconverter make sure it can do a center cut.

Sounds like you have a lot to worry about on the shoot, why don’t you just downconvert afterwards?

had thought about that as well… its nerve wracking to have the masters sent out though… lots of work to have something happen to the masters… wanna try and get as much in the field as possible.

WHy don’t you do the downconvert yourself? Rent a 1200A deck for a day and do the record from the 1200A to the DV50 deck. Make sure you set the deck for center cut and slave the timecode from the HD to the SD deck (tc out to tc in and set tc generator to external on DV50 deck). That way the only person you blame is yourself when something goes wrong 😉 Also, it gives you time to mess around and get it right when you aren’t concerned about the shoot.

Take it for what it’s worth and who the heck am I to tell you your workflow, I’d just rather be concerned about getting a nice HD image first, then worry about the post after that.
