Varicam 60P to 25P in shake
We are about to shoot a music video on either varicam or possibly 16mm for a SD PAL (25P) timeline.
We’ve used the varicam before with the frame rate converter – digitising with SD SDI through frc for slowmotion and regular 25P footage selected in camera.
We’ve got loads of slowmo to do some 25P ‘normal’ speed stuff.
As I understand it, the Varicam effecively records at 60P onto tape anyway, and then flags the frames it wants for a 25P setting. – Is this right?
I’ve done some tests taking 60P footage into shake and converting to 25P (speeding it up x2.4 and choosing the nearest frame) which gives ‘real time motion at 25fps. This all looks fine to me…I was imagining that I could shoot everything at 60P – use the 1200A deck to get the footage in via firewire at 60fps – and then (in shake) renderout to what ever speed I want the slowmo to be or ‘real time’ 25fps. I would render to Blackmagic anamorphic 25P 4:4:4 SD PAL for editing in a 25P timeline in finalcut.
I know this sound a bit ridiculous – but in many ways it will suit us well if we can select the degree of slowmo or indeed ramp the speed in post later for the majority of shots.Does this all sound feasable?
Any advice / opions would be greatfully received.

That is feasible, the downside being the extra light needed to expose the camera at 60FPS if the shutter is at 180 degrees on the camera and also the motion will seem smoother than normal film style shooting being temporally samped at 60FPS rather than 25FPS. This look can be considered more “video” (not my term for it) and some people don’t like it.
