Recently, I have been running into freezes/crashes while rendering a fairly complex HDV project (many tracks, FXs, etc) into HD, via the Avid codec DNxHD-145, on my i7-950 Vista, Vegas 9b-64bit (8 gig Ram).

I tried the usual reduce threads, preview ram, etc. with no avail. Out of desperation, I set the threads to the max of 16 (at 1024 preview ram). The Vegas 9 manual states that setting these threads above the number of processors (or preceived processors)–in my case 8–will not help.

Not only did this 16 thread setting breeze through the 4 hour render (30 min project), but the memory, in the Task Manager, ran significantly higher (around 7.5g with all 8 processors at or near 100%). With the threads set a the previous 8, my memory ram would ran between around 5g). Needless to say, I was very surprised to see this.

Disclaimers: (1) I’ve only done this once, so it is possible it was some kind of fluke. (2) This behavior may only be relevant to the DNxHD codec. And, (3) HP may have put an extra Quad inside my box, without telling me (for being such a good customer), making my system a “closet 8-core”.

The last one I doubt very much.

But, for what it is worth, I thought that I would throw my experience out there. If you are having render problems with Veg9-64bit, try maxing the threads. I would be curious to learn if anyone else can duplicate this V9b behavior.
