    Hi again,
    Having a hard time with V-9 and making a video with still .jpg photos. Their filesizes are ~ 2.0 to 3.5 MB.
    Rendering into MPEG-2 DVD PAL, these still pictures look fine, exept when I use the Pan/Crop for a very moderate zoom (perhaps zoom-in from 100% to 80%, just to give a sense of motion.) The rendered results have a noticeable amount of shimmer or flicker. Not acceptable.
    I tried the setting: Edit/Switches/Reduce Interlace Flicker both “on” and “off”, with no apparent change or improvement. I did not spot any appropriate command in the “Options” either.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    File size means almost nothing.
    What matters is the image size in pixels.
    The usual recommendation (if you’re not doing deep zooms, and you’re not) is 2X the project size.
    In this case, that would be 1440 x 1152.
    IrfanView is a great (and free) app for doing very quick batch resizing, amongst many other things.

    If after doing what Mike suggests you still see some interlace flicker you can add a bit of vertical blur to make thin horizontal lines smoother. Also, if the whole video is just still images, I would change the project properties to 24p and totally avoid interlacing.

    Thank you, Mike and John.
    First: The original photos were 3648×2736 pixels, and Vegas seems to “accept” and work with them fine. (When resized down to 1440×1080 the flicker-upon-zoom was more noticeable.)
    The 24fps (vs. PAL standard 25fps) did not seem to have any effect/improvement against each other.
    Tests with a very difficult subject: Zooming-in a photo of a pebble beach, Rendered to MPEG-2 PAL with Field Order: None; Deinterlace Method: None; continued to show flicker, on both the 3648×2736 and the 1440×1080. However, when set to Linear Blur, 90° (vertical) amount .001 (the minimum?) seem to clear the flicker, although at a price of….the blur, of course.
    I guess the thing to do is to pick individually those photos which are being zoomed with the Pan/Crop, and blur those only, thus maintaining the max photo quality in the ones that are not pan/crop-zoomed.

    Also when you render make sure that your render settings are set to Best. This is very important when using images and resizing because Vegas will use bicubic resizing which is more accurate.

    Thank you, John. Yes indeed I noticed that “Best” was not the default option, so I made sure I selected it.
    As far as “bicubic” resizing, I normally do “bicubic” resizing using Paint Shop Pro, but since it seems that Vegas does a nice job on the original size photos, now I don’t resize at all any more for Vegas projects because that means doing it twice (once via PSP, and again by Vegas. I figure it’s bound to be a worse degrade.) The only reason for resizing, I would think, would be that the rendering time can thus be quicker?? If so, what would be the EXACT size (4:3 ratio) to pre-resize photos, so Vegas won’t do it itself – for PAL and for NTSC?

    4:3 PAL is 787 x 576 and 4:3 NTSC is 655 x 480 in square pixels.
