V1U 30P Capture
I have captured material at 30P on the Sony HVR V1U. Although there is no HDV 30P capture
options in FCP6 that I can see, bringing it in as 60i seems to work but it makes me feel uneasy and it doesn’t seem quite right to be working in a 60i sequence when the content is
supposed to be Progressive. I have been scanning several discussion groups and have posted a couple of times to no avail. Am I the only one working with 30P on a V1U with Final Cut? -

You are not alone, well, maybe you are with a V1U in 30P, but I am using 30P from a Canon A1 and I just love it. In a 60i timeline it works just fine. For broadcast, just let FCP and/or your card handle it, and if you’re going on the Web, just do a progressive output. BTW I did a test last week shooting a clip of someone walking by the camera at 60i, 24P and 30P, and when I did a native HDV capture FCP knew the frame rates were different and captured them all different. So it knows what’s coming in. No worries.
I prefer the look of 30P to 24P, and it just seems like less hassle. Only reason to shoot 24 is if you might someday go to film, otherwise, why bother? Here’s a great thread on this:

Thanks for the response. It is my understanding that Final Cut is aware of 30P with some Cannon models (page 35 of the HD & Broadcast Formats PDF – Using the Cannon XL H1 HDV
Camcorder. HDV – 1080P30 is an option. This does not come up with the Sony V1U connected and talking to someone at Apple, they admitted that 24P & 30P were not exactly
supported yet in FCP6 for the V1U so I don’t know what trouble I am getting into. I have been able to make it work but I can’t help feeling I am introducing some kind of distortion. Even if it is just a placebo, I would really like to see an HDV 1080P30 capture preset for this
camera. -

Yes, I see how you must feel. There are a few articles around about your camera, one in DV by Adam Wilt, perhaps he knows a workaround for you, or if indeed you’re okay.
A test you might try on your own, shoot something which has both still objects and some motion in it, and shoot it in 60i and then in your progressive modes. Do your capture and test some various outputs, tape, progressive QTs and see what you get. If it looks good, why worry?
You might also try some captures with the component out with a card if you have one, that way you could try different codecs and see how it all behaves. You’ll have to patch the audio somehow and live with new timecode, but hey, worse things happen.

One of the reasons for going with 30P is we are generating web content in addition
to HD & SD video and progressive is obviously the way to go for content that will be
viewed on a computer screen. I think strange things happen when exporting to various
web codecs like wmv, and h264mov when exporting from a 60i sequence when the data
is Progressive, eventhough everything appears correct on screen in Final Cut. I have been
playing with options, when available, for things like upper/lower/none dominance, interlace
or Progressive input, Progressive output, Transcoding to Progressive HD Movie first, etc…
