    Hi all:

I’ve been working on a green screen project that’s frustrated the hell out of me – I’ve used Keylight, Ultra 2, Matrox Chromakey, made procedural mattes,
traveling masks, Key Correct Pro…tried several of the suggestions I’ve read here on the Cow, but still not happy with the results. The original footage is not horrible, but it’s reflective and there are some fairly deep shadows. It’s HDV footage from a JVC HD100.

Anybody out there have any experience with this Ultimatte software? It’s about $1500, a lot more than any other chromakeying software. But it’s worth the investment to me if it does the job fairly painlessly. I’d welcome other suggestions as well.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Is there any chance I could get you to post a sample troublesome frame? =)

I’ve had good experience with Ultimatte 2.2 in AE 6.5; never used it with 7 though.

The thing I loved about it was that you could import a plate (or build one out of photoshop and existing frames), and it would create a very intelligent difference matte for you- useful when there’s a lot of consistent shadows/bright spots in your keying area.

on the bad side was that the plug-in would try to pop you into a seperate user interface to do all your tweaks.
Also, render time was kinda long.

http://www.ultimatte.com has a demo download, if you’d like to try it.

i have this in my toolbox and use it as a last resort.

it is DOG SLOW,was quite buggy when i first purchased it, and doesnt have a render engine license (you had to pay another 1500 even if you just want to put it on a render node)

but when i cant get a good enough key with keylight, primatte, or zmatte, Advantage has worked.

try the demo. the interface takes a bit to get used to, but once you get past the initial learning curve it all starts to makes sense.

thats what great about demos. if it works for you when nothing else will…

    who is that masked man…

i am lucky enough that i am rarely supplied DV/HDV footage, so i dont have experience with this plugin, but have you tried dvmatte?

    https://www.dvgarage.com/prod/prod.php?prod=dvmatteae

should be a demo there as well

everything rendernyc says is on track. we have a copy of ultimate advantedge and dongle for sale – drop me a line here if the download works for you. it’s too complex for our needs and it’s been collecting dust on the shelf, so we’d be glad to let it go for much less than the new price!

    cheers

Thanks to all for your responses. I could post a frame of my scene, but I’m not having too much of a problem with any single frame – it’s the changes in the shot over time (moving camera) that make this more difficult.

Rendernyc, you mentioned Primatte – how does that compare in terms of performance and speed? Tmvc, I may be in touch after I check out the demo.
Thanks again everyone for taking the time to respond.

If you find that primatte works for you and you are on a mac you might want to buy shake – for $300 less than the price of the full AE plugin you can get a full license of shake which includes primatte and keylight. I think there is a 30 day shake demo available as well. BTW, we have UAE and I would echo what has been said – slow, overly complex, no significant work done on it in years and it is exprensive.

primatte works faster as i recall and another one we use is zmatte from http://www.digitalfilmtools.com. ultimatte is the most comprehensive toolset but is more complex.

[rendernyc] “wish there were some better tracking on this forum….”

Just use the “Response Notification via Email” checkbox. If you select it, the posts will come.

If you like interfaces other than the one that’s threaded and is our default, use the “View Posts By (Display Type)” pulldown and set it to something else. We support the three most popular variants.
