UTF-8 in .ale files
Hi! I’m a norwegian editing assistant with a classical norwegian Æ-Ø-Å problem. I’m getting a set report from set every day, and I create .ale files from this, to automatically logg all the shots.
The set report is written i norwegian, and we have these letters, Æ, Ø and Å, that we use a lot. Æ, Ø and Å is within the UTF-8 text coding standard, and they work fine if I write them into my columns manually. But if I use the .ale file, and just drag it over my media files, Æ, Ø and Å becomes these cryptic strange not readable stuff.
For now, I’ve just replaced all the Æ’s with AE, and Ø’s with O, and Å with AA (Wich is quite normal on computers in Norway.) This is quite quick in textedit with find and replace.
But it’s a little stupid not to have Æ, Ø and Å’s in the logg inside Avid, so I have to ask if anyone knows of a solution to my small norwegian problem 🙂

It can be done, but requires a bit of effort.
The charset used for ALE seems to be ‘macintosh’ (also on Windows).
Note that there is no BOM (Byte Order Mark)So, open the provided ALE in a text editor, and see if it looks allright.
Then see if you can set the charset for saving in your text editor.
If you can’t find a text editor that allows for this, I can write a conversion util.Bouke
