Using Vegas with Norton running
I read somewhere that you should disable your computer virus protection software prior to working with Sony Vegas. I have worked with Vegas both with the protection software active and with it disabled and really did not notice any difference in processing or anything else. I am using Norton. Is it really necessary to disable Norton prior to working with Vegas? Is there any relationship to crashing and working while protection software is active?

If you are not having problems then there is no need to disable it. Norton is a particularly heavy weight program that tends to take over your computer. I would never recommend that anyone use it but that’s your choice. Depending on how aggressively some of this software is configured, it could cause problems with programs like NLE’s that require a lot of files be open at once. Norton is extremely aggressive and has been known to slow down system performance dramatically.

I use Microsoft Security Essencials. It is lightweight, efficient and free. But the best anti virus is: Don’t use your editing PC for navigating the Internet!

MSE has been so reliable here for the past few months that it’s hard to believe that it’s from Microsoft.
It’s fast, it’s small and it’s no resource hog like Norton.
That’s two things that Microsoft has done well (MSE and Win 7).

FYI, if you chose to remove Norton from your computer by using the control panel’s delete program app, you need to know that simply removing the program does not remove all of the Norton JUNK. You shoulg go to McAfee’s sight and download the Norton removal tool to get rid of all of the Norton files.
