Using layers to reveal text
Good morning:
I have a logo I would like to have revealed from under a layer of sand as though the wind blew it. Ideally just the text, leaving slight feathering around it, like uncovering a IED (the play I’m designing the graphic for is based in Iraq).
I started this morning (having had the ‘revelation’ at 4am) but had to race off to work having only fiddled a bit with layers, which is why I’m asking you folks for help: so I don’t spend the day obsessing.
I will be using particlemetrix for the “blown sand” effect.
I’m thinking some kind of mask?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Does the Text build like is was originally sand, or is it revealed as the sand disappears?

Now that you broach the subject, I like the option of both.
Originally I just wanted the logo to be revealed, with an irregular outline around it, possibly some kind of shadow to give the perception of the logo being in deep sand.
The idea of revealing just the text (and a couple of rectangles bordering the text) is intriguing, as well.
(Also, I could use this for the title sequence)
Rather than asking for too much, I will be most happy with revealing the logo.
If you feel moved to “tute” both, that will be joyfully accepted.

Zak Peric has a tutorial on making text into sand with the Particle Metrix plug-in. Plus the Particle Metrix plug-in has a free trial.
AS for the reveal of the logo, if you can make your sand black and white with the level filter so the sand is white and everything else is black you can do an image mask to reveal it. If you have never done an image mask check out this tutorial I did on creating a hologram. What you are after is in the middle of the tutorial. If not you will have to do a mask. Be sure to add a feather to it.
