Using Kona LHe for DVCPro HD

AJA provides DVCPRO HD Easy Setups for Final Cut Pro. It\’s possible you are filtering your Easy Setups by format or frame rate in the Easy Setup prompt, causing you to only see a select group of Easy Setups available to you. Or, during the AJA driver installation, you only chose Basic for Easy Setup installation and not any of the additional Easy Setups provided as optional installs. If this is the case, you can run the AJA driver installer again, deselect the driver and Basic Easy Setups and elect to install the Additional Easy Setups. Information regarding this can be found in the KONA operation manual.

uncompressed is higher quality than DVCPROHD and requires a lot faster raid and through put. The highest quality you can achieve is uncompressed 10 bit. I would just listen to the client and give them the DVCPROHD. It’s a compressed codec but it’s great codec. Especially if you don’t have the fastest computer on the planet. While I do agree with you about pro res I’ve learned that when the client ask for something specific just give it to them. Double check to see if it’s 1080 or 720, then make sure you’re capturing the right frame rate. It will come in as 23.98 (24p) or 59.94(same as 30fps) for progressive and 29.97 for interlaced.

Okay, here is another rub to throw into my mix. After digitizing with the above configuration, I check the footage and the audio seems to be leading the video by two seconds or so. So if someone is hitting a golf ball, you here the impact before you see it. I’m hoping this is a playback issue and not a capture/digitizing issue. Understand I am using HD-SDI out of the deck into the Kona LHe, and then into the system. Digitizing into DVCPRO HD with Final Cut. On playback, I am playing the video out through teh computer monitor, and the audio out through line out of the computer – NOT through Kona. I also tried playing a clip through Quicktime, still off by two seconds or so – with audio leading video. i’m going to go through all the troubleshooting, but wondering if anyone had encountered this and what it might be.

I would suggest contacting AJA Technical Support for assistance. Based on your description it’s possible that the PCIe slot for the KONA LHe card is operating at lower than needed speed or the KONA LHe is not placed in the optimal slot for performance. Sorry, I should have reported back as resolved. It turns out it wasn’t a system problem at all, but the way a few of the tapes were shot with a Protracer system that affected sync in the field. All is good!
