Using HD clips alongside Mini DV in a Standard Timeline
Posted by Dominic Elliot on June 24, 2010 at 1:58 pmI have one bit of film that was made in HDV, and I want to use it with the rest of my material, which was filmed in standard mini DV PAL. It gets distorted when I put it into the timeline – how can I convert it in such a way that it joins the other footage seamlessly? Would be hugely grateful for some help and feedback!

June 24, 2010 at 2:26 pmGet’s distorted how? What’s standard mini DV PAL? Is it 4:3 or 16:9? If it’s the former the material will appear letterboxed, if the latter, the HD material should just scale down to find the widescreen format.
All the best,
Tom

June 24, 2010 at 2:45 pmThanks Tom for responding to my call for assistance!
The HD and the mini DV clips were both filmed in 16:9. When I drop an HD clips into the timeline with the other 16:9 DV clips, it shrinks itself into the frame. I’ve also noticed that it appears as a much wider looking 16:9 than ‘normal’ 16:9. Up till now I’ve been managing the problem by zooming in on the clip so that it fills the entire frame, but this is not ideal.
I have also tried right clicking on it and selecting ‘remove attributes’ but all this does is make a very small adjustment in the width of the clip but does not solve the other distortions.
It also flicks outwards every time I put a title or subtitle over it, so it ends up zooming in and out on playback!!

June 24, 2010 at 2:59 pmWhat kind of HD is this exactly? What are the specs of the original? Can you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing?
Are you looking at the rendered output of the titles on a widescreen video monitor?
All the best,
Tom

June 24, 2010 at 3:37 pmYes, you’re right! My mistake – the problem was that the original HD had been exported as a quicktime and then reimported. The original HD material renders into the timeline without any distortion.
Many thanks for your help!
