Using FCPX to search BMCC metadata
Hello,
First post here so hello everyone!
I was led to believe by a blackmagic tech guy over the phone that if, whilst shooting with the BMCC, I change the clip ID within the camera metadata (exteriors, interviews etc) then I would easily be able to search through my footage once imported into FCPX.
Following this advice I spent a 6 day shoot meticulously organising everything with clip ID’s on the camera. I am now in front of the computer and can’t find a way to search through the clip ID’s on FCPX and also can’t seem to find any advice on how to do so or if it is even possible.
Is anyone able to help or have I now got mountains of unorganised footage?

Which metadata view are you looking at in the Inspector? And when you say clip id- which field do you refer to?

I’ve tried all the metadata views and made a custom one to include ‘clip id’s’.
Clip ID is something you can assign to a clip in the metadata function of a Black Magic Cinema Camera.
Really (and what I thought I was going to be able to do) is to be able to search the whole library for clips with a certain word used in the ‘clip ID’ section of the BMCC. -

When you ask if they are working what do you mean?
Searching in the browser does not return any results except for clip names and I have far too much footage to rename each clip.
Please excuse my lack of FCPX knowledge – I very recently made the switch. -
What do you see in the Inspector for the Scene field under the Info tab.

So I need to search my clips using the clip ID section – in this example it is “p.e.”

I’m confused- why use the clip i.d. as a unique identifier when you’ve got scene/take/description available.

Well, I initially wanted to use it because it is the largest (in the BMCC menu) unique identifier option and is at the top – this means that when I need to very quickly change the identifying word it is the first and easiest option.
After concluding the above I checked with blackmagic technical support that it would be easily searchable within FCPX – which they informed me it would be.
I chose not to use scene and take because these are both restricted to numerical values in the BMCC menu and I needed to assign specific words to clips. -
“Metadata with clip ID”. Is that a field you created?
