  • Using DVC HD in SD Sequence

Posted by Lee Hilliard on January 10, 2009 at 6:32 pm

I did read the exhaustive thread “Really? No One Has Seen this?” but would like to come back to one of the initial points…

My situation: project going to DVD & web, shot interviews with HPX-170 at 720-30PN, attempting to edit in FCP 6.0.1 DVC50 sequence, 720×480.

I need to re-size and re-frame certain clips at edit points. When bringing in a clip into the sequence it displays letterboxed showing in the Motion Tab/Scale = 75% and Distortion/Aspect Ratio = -50. Increasing Scale to 100% fills frame top-to-bottom (fine) and crops the sides (also fine).

Point of confusion: why does it take scaling a 720 clip at 100% to fill a 480 sequence? I assume the -50 Aspect Ration is dealing with the 960×720 actual frame size.

Side question: Am I correct in assuming that when using a DVC50 sequence (601/DV pixels) the resolution should be 720×486 for broadcast output and 720×480 for DVD?

    Thanks,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,
You need t make your DVC50 sequence Anamorphic.
When you drop your 720p footage on it, will fit in the screen. No letter-box. No cropping.

[Lee Hilliard] “Side question: Am I correct in assuming that when using a DVC50 sequence (601/DV pixels) the resolution should be 720×486 for broadcast output and 720×480 for DVD? “
No. 720×486 is only when you go to print to DigiBeta.
If you go to print to DVCPro50 or DVD, you must go 720×480.

Rafael, thanks but I need the SD to be 4×3, thus I want it cropped.
Questions revolve around best method/workflow in using a 720×480, or 720×486, piece of the 1280×720 HD frame in an SD program.

    Hi Lee,
720 x 486 only if you intend to print to DigiBeta.
if you go to print to DV50, must be 720 x 480.
    Cheers,
    Rafael
