    Hi,

I’m just learning the ropes of video editing and would really appreciate some advice. I have a question, the type of which I have seen asked a lot, but would appreciate an exact solution to my problem, taking into account my specific formats, and the equipment I have at my disposal, as I plan to use a combination of this type of footage in multiple projects.

The majority of my footage was captured using a Sony VX2100E – this footage is DV PAL, 720×576, 16:9, 25FPS,

The other footage was captured using a tiny sports helmet camera – this footage is Ambarella AVC encoder, 1280×720, 29.97fps

I am editing using Final cut pro on a Mac Pro with 7GB ram, and have final cut studio, and adobe cs3 (although not after effects)…at my disposal…plus things like MPEG Streamclip etc

My project is set up in FCP in sequences which were correct for the DV PAL footage – 720×576 (aspect ratio: CCIR 601/DV PAL (5:4)) with anamorhpic ticked – field dominance set to lower / 25fps / compressor – dv pal – this is obviously fine if i’m just using this type of footage, from the Sony camera, but now i want to integrate the helmet cam clips

Most of them look fine if I just bring them down into the original sequences, but on some clips the footage is noticeably jittery.I realise that this is because i’m playing progressive HD 29.97 footage crudely in an SD interlaced 25fps sequence…so I’m looking for the best solution – i’ve read about a variety of potential solutions and have tried a couple – but would really like a concise answer specific to my exact needs from someone more experienced as I dont have time in this instance to experiment further..

if i drop the helmet footage into its own sequence the settings fcp creates for it are:
    1280X720 / aspect ratio HDTV 720P 16:9 / pixel aspect ratio:square/field dominance: none / 29.97 fps / compressor h.264

Can someone please tell me what I should do to this 29.97 footage to get it working well in the 25fps sequence. If you need any more information from me, let me know. Thanks for your help

    Mike

Use compressor to convert all the Non DV PAL to DV PAL 720×576, 16:9, 25FPS

You need to test it with Frame Control on,

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for getting back to me…I’ve tried converting a file inside compressor to DV PAL, as suggested, and the result is fine – there is a loss of sharpness in the image though, which I assume is normal as I’m downgrading from HD to SD, but is there any way of getting some of it back?

And, there is one problem – the file size of this particular footage has jumped from its original 1.12GB to a whopping 9.29GB. What would you suggest is the best way to reduce this file size while still keeping quality of image? – I know I’ll have to experiment, but would like advice on where to start and what to play around with…

    Cheers
    Mike
