  • Using Card Dance to Simulate a Army?

Posted by Jack Hilkewich on November 10, 2005 at 8:36 pm

I read on the net a article/tutorial written by the guy who did effects for Xena. He explained how to simulate an army using the Card dance filter. I cannot find that, the links are dead, now my company wants to try and simulate a arny. Is there a tutorial out there that can help me out?

    Thanks for any help!

(This is longer than it needs to be, sorry, feeling chatty tonight.)
It’s not really that difficult to get started but, yeah, some serious help would be good. How much does your company want to invest in the effect? TotalTraining’s AE series contains enough information on Card Dance to make it happen for you but you gotta buy the whole package.

You can start with a layer that contains, say, a 3×4 matrix of little picture of army guys. Apple Card Dance and figure out how to make 12 cards appear. You can then tilt the cards along the x axis so they stand up. Moving them up and down, left to right and elsewhere is accomplished by using compound effects by referencing grayscale images. For example, create a layer that is a white circle on a black background and point the y-offset at it. Your cards that are sitting on top of the white circle will rise up, those on the black background won’t.

Umm, yeah, it’s really confusing. I can’t think of any books that actually explain card dance but there used to be a HUGE section of the AE online help files dedicated to it.
