using anamorphic instead of 4:3 pillarbox when upscaling from 480i to 1080
I have some 4:3 standard video footage that I’m upscaling to 1080. Regarding aspect ratio, is it ok to use anamorphic instead of 4:3 pillarbox? Even though this will result in the footage being horizontally stretched on output. I can correct this in Final Cut Pro using an adjustment layer and setting the X Scale to 75%.
This might sound counter-productive but my reason for doing so is that the 4:3 pillarbox look is quite jarring and distracting when viewing that footage in the thumbnail strip mode in Final Cut Pro’s browser window. When that footage is horizontally stretched on import, there no pillarboxes in thumbnail mode and thus less distracting. I feel that the 4:3 pillarbox look wastes a lot of real estate space in Final Cut Pro’s browser thumbnail mode.
Just wanted to put this out there to get feedback on whether that’s ok technically, or likely to cause unforeseen problems down the line.Thank you in advance for any advice.
