  • Using AE 7 to convert 4:3 footage to 16:9

Now . . . before everyone runs to jump on me about reading the posts on aspect ratio, let me explain my situation. I shoot EVERYTHING 16:9. We were doing this tricky shoot today where we needed three cameras. One cameraman had been shooting a wedding video and had forgotten to set his camera back to 16:9. So . . . I have a bunch of great footage shot in 4:3, which I can’t mix with my other footage.

Now . . . people go from 16:9 to 4:3 all the time. And . . . a search of the internet is overflowing with articles on how to do this. What I need to know is . . . how to go the other way. How can I take my buddy’s 4:3 footage and convert it to 16:9 in AE without it looking all stretchy like it was shot in Cinemascope? Or . . . and please don’t tell me this . . . am I irrevocably screwed?

I edit in Vegas and I do all my post work in AE 7 Pro. Thanks for any help!

    Long live the new flesh!

Make a DV widescreen comp (preset) and drag the footage into it. Use the fit to width command (ctrl-alt-shift-H) so your footage fits the width of the comp. The top and bottom will be cut off.
