  • Using a TV monitor as a preview in Premiere

Posted by Phil Lister on July 29, 2013 at 6:38 pm

Is there a way to use a TV monitor while editing with Premiere?
I don’t mean where you see the software interface screen, but like in the old days when using Firewire and just seeing the video itself on the TV. I remember using a Firewire cable connected to my camera and then using the RCA cables connected to a TV. That way, you just saw the video and not the Premiere screen along with it.

My video card has 2 DVIs and one HDMI out. I tried setting it up within the software and it does see a connection, but I still see the software interface screen on the TV.

Please explain it in English with little tech terms. lol
    Thanks,
    Phil

Preferences -> Playback should have an option to use a secondary display for previews.

The only thing I have under preferences is Adobe Player.

    Hi Phil,

In your playback preferences, under Video Devices it should show all monitors connected to your system. As shown in the image below, check whichever box is your 2nd monitor and click OK.

Please let us know if your 2nd monitor is not showing up.

I’m not seeing all of that on my screen. I’m using CS5, does that make a difference? My video card is the Nvidia GTX 570.

Here’s what my screen looks like:

Ok it’s been a little while since I’ve done this. Try the following steps:

First, I had to make sure my TV monitor was attached using the HDMI cable. Video monitor is in the DVI port. Then, opening the video card control panel, I made sure the monitor was set as a separate one and not as a clone. Once that was done, it was merely a matter to select in Premiere under sequence and player settings the monitor in question. Presto!
