  • Using a THIRD Monitor as a preview monitor…

This has been touched before, but the previous threads seems to be dealing with coming out of a Capture card (AJA, Blackmagic et al.).

In our third edit suite (2Ghz DP G5) which is an Offline only suite no grading, no effects etc…, we need to be able to preview Anamorphic footage for the director, but we only have a 4/3 monitor. There seem to be several solutions:
-Matrox MXO – we really don’t neeed all that functiuonality
-Miranda PicoLink ARC – nice, but a one trick pony
-Connecting up a third monitor via a 2nd graphics card (there is a older PCI model made by ATI that would work)

I would like to go for the latter solution as it is the cheapest and most flexible, but I wanted confirmation that the setup would work within Final Cut Pro, and how to set it up via Desktop Cinema Preview.

Am I right in thinking that I would hook up the 1st and 3rd monitors to the main graphics card, and then the 2nd monitor to the 2nd graphics card. That way selecting Full screen in Desktop Cinema Preview would output the video to the third monitor, leaving the other two for editing…?

    Has anyone done this ?

    Thanks a lot in advance

This will work… but from my experience you will have a tough time playing back high quality in real time. You might be able to squeeze by with dv footage but anything uncompressed or HD will be choppy. You are much better split monitoring off your IO card ( AJA/BlackMagic) for your third monitor. Use the downconvert option in the control pannel to preview your anamorphic footage on a 4:3 monitor.
