  • Using a PAL DVD in USA/Canada?

Posted by Paul J scannell on May 8, 2005 at 5:28 pm

I have just created a PAL DVD via DVDA v3 and want to send a copy to people in USA/Canada.

My understanding, correct or otherwise, is that the disc should play as is in a DVD drive atatched to a PC without problem. However I am not sure whether or not the disc will play in a domestic DVD player attached to a TV. I think that it will not but would appreciate confirmation from those that know for sure.

If it will not play as is in a domestic DVD player, am I correct in thinking that I can burn an NTSC version from the current PAL project by simply changing the disc properties in DVDA to NTSC?

    Also, what NTSC settings should I use, i.e., 704 x 480 or 720 x 480?

    TIA for any assistance.

    Galway, IRELAND.

It is quite possible that the DVD player will PLAY the disc but it is most probable that the TV will NOT display it. You really need to send an NTSC DVD to the states.

Paul, Edward is right in that North America hasn’t caught on to the rest of the world and made our electronics multi-standards capable 🙁
You’re stuck with sending an NTSC DVD over here which is 720 x 480.

It is uderstood that NTSC is used for USA and Canada, but Paul also asked…

“am I correct in thinking that I can burn an NTSC version from the current PAL project by simply changing the disc properties in DVDA to NTSC?”

And I have the same exact question. Do you just render the existing PAL project as NTSC?
Also, is it best to do this in Vegas or DVDA?

Anny, I’ve never tried it myself but, from reading past posts here and on other Vegas forums, it’s my understanding that you simply render the file out as NTSC from a Vegas PAL file.

Found the post I was looking for. The recommended procedure (thanks to Robert Grant) is as follows:

Simply render to NTSC from a PAL project. I set Deinterlace Method to Merge Fields and turn on Reduce Interlace Flicker on the event(s).
The only downside to this is you will get some motion blur from the de-interlacing which is needed for the frame rate conversion. I’ve found this quite acceptable.
