using a dell ultrasharp monitor with a powerbook G4
Hello,
I edit on a Powerbook G4 that came with the standard video card. I am interested in buying a Dell UItrasharp display to edit with as an external monitor, and want to make sure my computer can use it at the highest resolution, which is 1920 x 1200.
I have spoken to Dell and Apple representatives and no one seems to be able to give me a definite answer. Does anyone know if this will work? I can’t seem to find any system requirements mentioned for the dell monitors. Thanks in advance!

We are going to need more info about your PowerBook before we can say anything.

When you say external monitor, do you mean as a Video External Monitor or as a secondary Computer display monitor?
If you mean external video display, then you’ll need something like a Matrox MXO, but I’m not sure if that works with a G4.
If you mean as a secondary Computer display monitor, you’ll need to look at your Powerbook manual and see what resolutions are supported on a secondary display.

My powerbook is running on a 1.25 ghz PowerPC G4 processor with 512 mb ram. I don’t know what type of video card it has, I’m afraid it’s just whatever it came with.
I am planning on using it as a secondary computer display monitor, because I would like a bigger landscape to work within while editing. Also, I have been told that color correction won’t be accurate if I use a computer monitor as a video external monitor, but would the matrox mxo make accurate color correction possible?
I am working on a documentary shot in SD right now. Are there any other monitors you can recommend that might fit my needs better? After this project I plan to start shooting in HD so I was thinking the Dell would be good to have for future use as well.
Thanks for your help, I will check my powerbook manual to see what resolution it can support. Just for future reference, what determines how much resolution a computer can support for a secondary display? Is it memory, processor, video card, etc?

I think your model will, but to be safe I would recommend taking it to a store and ask if you can test it on one of there display monitors.
