“Use Previews” doesn’t seem to lower export time
Hi all – so, doing some tests in PPro today for an upcoming gig. I placed AVCHD clips in a DVCPROHD (QT) timeline. 1080p24 footage. 1080i60 timeline. 10 minutes of footage in the timeline. My goal with these tests is to figure out how long my timeline will take to render. Also, I’m testing this figure out the quickest way to get timelines out to QT files (in my case, DVCPROHD).
Exporting using “Match Sequence Settings” took about 13 minutes.
So I tried to render the timeline out FCP-style, figuring I’ll have multiple outputs of the timline after I tweak stuff, client approval, bla bla bla. Went to export settings, selected “Use Previews.” The export took… 13 minutes.
Curiouser and curiouser, I thought. So, I brought the exported QT file back into premiere and duplicated the timeline. I figured the specs will match, which they did. I replaced the media with the exported QT. Then I exported the timeline again to Prores QT file and selected Match Seq Settings and Use Previews – the export went fast, as one would hope.
I should mention that I have created my own special timeline settings to render at DVCPROHD QT. But please note that I also tested this with the built-in P2 DVCPRO HD sequence settings and found the same issue.
As a side note to all of this, Adobe Media Encoder just crashes each time I try exporting using any of the above settings.
So, is there anything I’m doing wrong here?

Aha. I think I fixed it. The answer was here:
https://forums.adobe.com/message/4582134The trick is this – after editing/rendering – go to Project settings and turn off Mercury for the GPU. Choose *Keep Your Preview Files*. Then export, choose match settings, use previews, and it works.
I love it when a plan comes together.
