  • Use of Telephoto & Wide Angle Adapters on DVX100A

    Hello
I’m in deep with 3 pages of Pros & Cons to either purchase a new XL2 or DVX100A. New to DV. Leaning towards the DVX100A. But I really like the 20X optical zoom on the XL2. Are there telephoto or wide angle adapters availabe for the DVX100A? How do these work. What are the pitfalls? Is there a downgrade in resolution. What are the mid to high end adapters recommended if avaialbe? Read an excelent review that compared the XL2 to the DVX100A by Jarred Land and Barry Green that stated the DVX100A had a very wide angle lens. How wide is “very”? I would like to shoot verry dramatic vistas and architecture. And lastly, how is the control of the Depth of Field with the DVX100A?

    Thanks
    Bruce

    Bruce –

you can also use something like the micro35 (www.micro35.com) to use 35mm lenses with the DVX. It allows you to use a whole array of 35mm lenses (such as SLR) beyond just the usual wide angle and achromat adapters.

I have also used century optics’ 1.7 wide angle adapter and though I’ve found it to be good, the micro35 gives me a lot more options for around the same price. Century also provides an achromatic, though I haven’t used it.

    Cheers

I’m in Rio de Janeiro using a DVX100A for the first time. I shoot very little DV, mostly with a DSR-500, so the little camera is both fun and challenging. My crew and I are here doing a documentary about beach soccer (the first FIFA World Cup is happening on Copacabana Beach as I write this from the Press Room).
The normal lens has very good wide angle (I can’t give specifics, it just feels wide). I don’t like it’s limited 12x zoom range. I’m also using the Century anamorphic adapter which gives the best 16×9 resolution, but its rectangular front end precludes using other screw-on adapters. My big pet peeve is the postion of the white-balance button (right on the front left where I want to put a finger for balance). I guess a secong complaint would be the low resoltion color viewfinder. My biggest delite is getting over big-camera envy. There are a lot of Beta crews here, but I’d love to see them walk for blocks through a market while holding their big rigs high above their heads. 🙂
