I’m not sure where the best place is to post this message, so I thought I’d try here.

I’m working with a client who is sponsoring a race car driver (not NASCAR — this is a younger group of drivers, the Pro Late series.) We have shot interviews with the driver, and want to include b-roll of the race in the edited video. The video is to be shown on YouTube, and used for marketing by my client.

There are lots of billboard ads around the track, with company logos on them. And, all of the other cars in the race are pretty uniquely identifiable.

My question is, what are the rules on using this footage? Do I need to blur out logos on the billboards? Do I need release from the other cars’ owners that are in the shots?

Contact the track promoter’s office first and see if they have a blanket permission arrangement regarding all the drivers and their cars.
