Use an AFP share via symbolic link
So this might turn out to be a horrible idea, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else…
I’m in a small shop with 3 editing systems, and we use network storage primarily as a way to keep projects in one central place and keep them backed up (The projects go on a network RAID, and then the RAID is also backed up nightly onto a separate RAID…since RAID != backup)
I just brute-forced Final Cut Pro X into letting me create new events on the network, by simply creating a “Final Cut Events” folder on the network, and then making a symbolic link to that folder within my user “Movies” folder.
I’m going to be doing a 3-camera edit a little later tonight. I’ll let you know if it blows up.
It might also blow up when, say, more than 1 machine try to read and write to the same Events Folder.
So yeah, very untested! Use at your own risk! But that’s exactly what we’re doing right now…trying a few little projects in “X” to see if we can make use of it or not on certain short and quick turn around projects.
Having actually used it a bit, I’m right there with most other people who have actually, you know, tried it. The things it does well it does so well! And the things that it doesn’t do are very frustrating. We shoot with everything from $300 AVCHD camcorders to XDCAM, dSLRs, RED, 16mm, HDCAM, and we just purchased a Canon C-300. Earlier tonight I brought in audio and video from a 2 dSLR shoot, and within 20 minutes I was able to get the audio synced up with the video, and get the whole thing into a multicam sequence. All this in less time than it took me in FCP 7 to just transcode the media. Incredible.
