  • Use a Set Matte for two different Colors on an RGB pass???? Any ideas?

I have an RBB pass from 3D and I want to use 2 of the 3 channels for my alpha. I know you are thinking, just use the 3rd color and invert it, but the RGB pass doesn’t cover all parts of the render so if I invert it there are things that I don’t want to see. Ok, so I know there are tons of ways to do this, and I know I can precomp the layer and then do another set matte, but I was wondering if anyone knew a different method.

I think you’ve already hit it, at least partly, with the precomp, but I’m not sure if I completely understand what you’re suggesting. Here’s what I would do, based one what you said: put two layers of your RGB pass in a timeline, then go to Effect => Color Correction => Channel Mixer and put everything to 0 except Blue-Blue, for example, to pull out the blue blue channel on one, and then on the other pull out the red channel using the same effect. Once you’ve isolated your channels, use the Tint effect to make them black and white, then precomp them together and use that comp as a Luma Matte for your source, which should reveal what you want to reveal.

If this doesn’t make any sense, post a video or still so we can see what you’re talking about.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Yeah, that definitely makes sense, and is one of so many options that you can do. I just wished there was a way to just put 2 set mattes on a layer or some other effect so that there wont be any effects on the rgb matte, and no precomping involved.

For instance I’m not that familiar with node based systems, but know that if I were in fusion for instance, I could merge the red and the green and then use them as the matte.
