  • USB 3.0 drives come to the market

The article below is a very interesting read. USB 3.0 hard drives are put now and tests show they absolutely fly when compared to both firewire 800 and USB 2.0, and they are almost just as fast as eSATA drives. Of course, either you’ll need an adapter card for older computer or a new computer wit USB 3.30 built-in to get the benefits.

The big questions for the future would have to be:
    1) Do they deliver sustained throughput good enough for video?
    2) Can they be configured as a RAID?

Will the NEW MacPros have a USB 3.0 port, as the current line only has 2.0….

WIll people think that now that they have USB 3.0, their USB 2.0 ports will work…

Undoutedly many will buy USB 3.0 drives in error, hoping to use them with their older Mac computers, thinking they will be faster, and we\’ll have deliver the sad news yo every one of them that they\’ll need to buy a USB card to get the performance benefit.

And, perhaps the reason the new gen. MacPros have not hit the market is that Apple was waiting until they could deliver machines with USB 3.0 on the mainboard?

Caldigit is going to show their new USB 3.0 hard drive for the Mac (Caldigit AV Drive) at NAB. They say it has speeds up to 140MB/s.

Just thinking out loud here, but if the USB 3.0 drives have sufficient sustained input for video, and if the next update of the iMac includes USB 3.0, I’d be very tempted to go with a new iMac over a Mac Pro.

Just depends on how much rendering you have to do. If you require a lot of rendering, the towers render much faster than the iMacs.

Shhhh!!! Don’t say that aloud or they’ll never put the darned USB 3.0 thing in anything except the MacPros.

The Mac Pro’s could be coming next Monday or Tuesday! Would be good timing on Apple’s part.

Would be, especially if Studio 4 comes out on Monday.

It looks like PC Magazine’s test didn’t exactly do justice to the new USB 3.0 drives. Their review states that USB 3.0 has almost the same throughput as eSATA. Well, it seems that’s not the case — CalDigit’s new AV Drive, a single-drive USB 3.0 solution, is capable of 160MB/s throughput. That absolutely blows away any single eSATA drive and every other current single drive solution as well.

Interesting David, thanks for bringing this to my (our?) attention. Makes me slightly less worried about buying a macbook pro without an express slot for eSATA.
