  • URGENT – Boris 3D on monitor that’s not there

Posted by Max Frank on August 10, 2005 at 8:51 am

    Hi,

My usual set-up is running FCP 4.5 (G5 2.0) with two monitors.
When I open my Boris 3D titler, the text input window opens on my 2nd screen (on the right).

I am now working at my clients premises, using only ONE monitor.

The problem is, when I open Boris 3D, it still opens the text input screen on the 2nd monitor – and because the monitor ISN’T there, I can’t get to it to close it, move it, or anything else.
So the program just waits for me.

    Pressing esc. doesn’t help.
Using expose doesn’t bring the window to the fore.
Changing the monitor size doesn’t seem to help, either.

Please — any suggestions will be greatly appreciated – I’m under a deadline here and I NEED to use the Boris titler.

    Thanks,

    Wayne

Have you tried trashing your preference file for FCP? Not sure it will work but won’t hurt, might put it to the side so you can bring it back if you have a lot of prefs changed.

You should be able to use the “Displays” function in the Mac’s System Preferences to “force” all windows to show up on a single monitor. But if this does not work for you…

You might try Trashing the FCP Preferences.
The Preferences retain your window layout positions.

Caution: If you DO this, ALL of your FCP Preferences (and “Favorites”) on this computer will “go away” and revert to the software’s basic one-monitor settings.

But if you’re in a pinch, this might do the trick.

Click the following link for instructions on how to do this.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

    NOTE:
If you use the free software, “FCP Rescue”, you can first SAVE your Preference settings.
Quit FCP, then you can use FCP Rescue to Trash the Preferences, but DO NOT “Restore” them.
Just open FCP before you choose to “Restore” and see if the Title window shows up.
Then, after you get the job done, you can use FCP Rescue to “Restore” your former Preferences (The Favorites should return as well.)

Download the “FCP Rescue” Apple Script at

    Hi Guys,

    thanks for the responses.

Matt, can you please tell me where the ‘force all’ feature is exactly, I can’t seem to find it (10.3.9)

    Thanks,

    Wayne

[Wayne K.] “can you please tell me where the ‘force all’ feature is exactly,”

    There is not a “feature”.

At least when using CRT monitors, you can just open the Display settings and resize the display to the highest setting.
At that point everything that’s displayed should be available for you to manipulate over to the one monitor.

Then, you can resize the display back to its normal size.

    It’s not working.

I trashed my prefs and tried making did the thing with the monitor preferences – but to no avail!

    Any other ideas?

At this point something sounds “too” strange if it won’t respond to simple procedures.

    So we are left with:

    1. Operator error: Are you sure you are operating Title 3D correctly? (Never hurts to make SURE).

    2. Software corruption: Reinstall FCP and/or the Boris title programs.

    3. Hardware issues: Add a second Monitor to the Mac you’re using and see if that clears it up.

Well a second monitor would at least allow you to move the window back to the main screen… from then on it should open there I’d think.

    Guys,
    Thanks again for the help.

Good idea Jerry – I’m going to have to find another monitor and pull the Boris window back in order for me to work with it.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to help me.

    All the best,
