Upscale/upres DVCPro HD 720p material to 1080p
Hi everyone,
I’m about to grade a feature documentary film this week, and have a bunch of shots that are filmed 720p (25fps by the way) in the DVCPro HD codec. What is the best method to upscale/upres this material? Should I use a plug-in like Red Giant’s Instand HD using AE, or perhaps the BCC Uprez effect in MC before getting it into Davinci? Or should I just import the 720 “as is” in Resolve and just sharpen the image a bit there, also just stretching it right during grading? If so, what are the best settings for that?
Any ideas and thoughts are most welcome 🙂

I’m afraid the Teranex is not an option for me at the moment. But what’s the best software solution for an upscale? Does Smoke do a good job perhaps?

yes, give Smoke2013 a try. Choose the Lanczos filter.

Well, lets run this one up the flag pole. If you have a couple of SDI systems, Kona / Decklink, why not play out the DVCPro clips to the other system and capture wild 1080ProRes (simulates a Teranex hardware uprez)? I capture uprezzed from tape often and once did a 720P documentary playout-to-capture (48 minute show) with this technique. Passed QC… deposited the cheque.
The Decklink does a nice 2:3 cadence conversion for 23.98–>29.97 as well, and it takes (real time) as opposed to roughly 20 times program length for a (Compressor) software conversion.

I’d go with Smoke as well, unless there are helicopters involved :)!

I’d go with Scratch or Nuke, Lanczos or Sync filter for the upres.
