So i was wondering if someone couldmplease check my work flow. I have a film as a file in 720p (960×720) which needs to be uprezed to 1920×1080. I have heard the quickest way to do this is:

output the file to tape at 720p 960×720
    capture i back at 1920×1080

*Is this a viable way of doing this? Am i able to do this with a Kona Lhe?

My obvious first thought was to scale the file in a 1920×1080 sequence and dump it to tape that way? Seems like a time consuming render? Any thoughts?

    cheers

The Kona 3 does this thru the card, in realtime as you output. It can upconvert SD to HD and cross convert 720p to 1080p. The Kona LH cannot do this. It can downconvert, but not upconvert or cross convert.

If you lack the Kona 3 and have a Kona LH (like I do), then this is your only option. But you’ll need quite a serious RAID to handle this. 5 drive SATA Raid minimum.

This can’t be done with the Kona LH. You’re best bet it to find a place with the Kona 3 and output on the fly.

Have I been reading wrong, or is the Io HD only available for Intel Macs?

[montador] “Have I been reading wrong, or is the Io HD only available for Intel Macs?

What are your reading sources I have not seen anything that spicificaly says it requires an intel mac, only that it requires Final Cut Studio 2 and a Firewire 800 port.

Besides here is a quote from AJA’s web site

“The Io family of products provide a simple elegant plug-in solution for working with Final Cut Pro on a Mac. With a single FireWire connection, any Io connects to the Power Mac and provides audio and video I/O, connection to VTRs, Genlock and integrated Final Cut Pro drivers. With the proper FireWire card and external drives, you can even use Io products with an Apple laptop. Io products are the simple solution for building a Mac-based video finishing system.”

If you look at the Io HD brochure, it specifically mentions Mac Pro and MacBook Pro, both of which are Intel machines. Your quote is from the top of the Io family page. I’ll see if I can find out from AJA what the story is on the HD.

I’ve heard back from AJA and right now the Io HD has been tested with and does work with the Intel based products, we were using one of the prototypes in the AJA booth at NAB.

No testing has been done on the PPC machines as of today and we will not know if those will be qualified until more testing is done. When the Io HD is released in July, AJA will release a full list of qualified machines that will work with the Io HD.

Just keep in mind, it’s still being developed and a lot of testing and work will be done by AJA by the time it’s released in July.

Is it not possible with the LHe to output 720p to a Panasonic DVCPROHD VTR and then use the VTR to cross-convert to 1080i?

Yes, but only on playback. It does not cross-convert during record.

Output your 720P project to tape, then recapture at 1080i, using your deck to do the conversion. On my deck which is an HD150 it’s menu item 631 or 2, which you change to convert the 720P to 1080i. Don’t know what it would be on a 12 or 1400. Then record your show to 1080i.

    Works perfectly!

If we’re shooting in 720P we capture at 1080i then edit in 1080i.
