    Hi Everyone,

This may seem elementary so some of you out there so bear with me. I have H.264 footage shot on the Canon 550D to be used for a music video. I’d like to multi-clip 9 split the takes together, but I get some lag when I do so at full resolution. I understand downresing all your clips to prores or DV in compressor and then bringing them into final cut. I understand with Betacam, DV, etc, you can just batch capture at a higher resolution, but what is the best workflow for upresing back to 1080 in a tapeless workflow? Any help would be great.

    Thanks,
    Brendan

Well prores isn’t “downresing” at all- in fact it works with most full HD codecs in full frame and bitrate and color space. For the 550d which shoots in H264, the best bet would be to put everything through a program such as mpeg streamclip to batch transcode to prores 422 at full quality, then work in a prores sequence in FCP. I think that’s best, let me know as well everyone, I too will be getting a 550d in a week 🙂

    Thanks Tom-

I understand that the prores codec isn’t downresing, but I would like to downconvert my 550D footage to DV so that I can multi-clip constantly without any lag. I downconvert in either MPEG Streamclip or Compressor, I just don’t really know how to upconvert back to 1080p from DV.
