Upper or lower field first?
I’m ripping some footage from a DVD using MPEG Streamclip and with the 8 bit uncompressed format setting (since I read that is one of the most lossless formats to do this, virtually identical?). The footage was originally shot on a mini-DV camera. I’m not sure how they recorded the tape to a DVD, but they may have used a DVD Recorder and not an editing program. I really don’t know.
Anyway, there’s an option for upper or lower field first. It says lower field first is for DV footage…but should I take this with upper field first since I’m getting it from a DVD and not ripping it with a DV codec..?

Don’t use 8-bit uncompressed, you’d need a RAID to play that back without dropping frames and it’s overkill. DVCPro50 is all you need to get more than the max when ripping a SD DVD (though ProRes 422 wouldn’t hurt either), and if you’re in the good old USA it’s lower field dominant.

Right. MPEGstreamclip will tell you the real field-order.

Half of the Hollywood movies DVDS are Upper first.

I’d say most “Hollywood movies DVDs” aren’t interlaced at all – they’re native 24p. It’s up to the DVD player to add 3:2 pulldown on output when needed.

You right Alan, but MPEG-2 for DVDs, even if they were Progressive, they were flagged as Interlaced.

Right, but even in this case you have two option for the outgoing NTSC (29.98) video signal. Being the original picture progressive,putting out Lower or Upper won’t make difference.
